In Memory of K-9 Chase:
Chief Chris Wagner is sad to report that K9 Chase passed this June, 2021. Chase served this department and the community well. He was partnered with Officer Joseph Lutkowski from 2010-2017. After retirement, Chase lived out his remaining years in the comfort of his home with Officer Lutkowski.
In Memory of K-9 Kane:
PMRPD sadly announces the death of retired K-9 Kane who died at home on Saturday (12-21-13). Kane was an 11 year German Shepherd who was cross trained in Patrol, Tracking and Narcotics. Cpl. Nero and Kane were responsible for hundreds of seizures of controlled substances and vehicles worth in excess of $1 million and the arrests of well over 200 people for drug related offenses. He tracked missing persons and found evidence which was discarded by suspects.
In 2010, Kane was awarded Monroe County Drug Task Force Officer of the Year by the Monroe County Drug Task Force. Most of all, he touched the lives of thousands of kids during his countless demonstrations at local schools and camps. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cpl Matt Nero and we appreciate and honor Kane’s dedicated service for the citizens of Coolbaugh, Tobyhanna, Tunkhannock Townships and Mt. Pocono Borough. He served with Cpl Nero and PMRPD from 2003-2010. He retired and was enjoying life at home with Cpl Nero and PMRPD K-9 Niko.
In Memory of K9 Niko:
Chief Chris Wagner is reporting the on-duty passing of K9 Niko. Niko reported to work on Wednesday, June 21st, 2017. K9 Niko and handler Matthew Nero were conducting a vehicle search when Niko went into physical distress. He was rushed to the Barton Heights Animal Hospital where it was determined he was suffering from a fatal health emergency unrelated to the vehicle search. Niko was euthanized in the arms of his partner Officer Nero. K9 Niko gave his all to this community, department and his partner, working into his final hour. K9 Niko served from 2010-2017.
